IN THE BEGINNING.

In a time when the fastest way from here to there was a horse, a few crazy people built aeroplanes. They made them by hand, from wood and fabric. They put motors on them, and spinning propellers.

After 10,000 years of dreaming, people flew.

- DAY ONE -

It was a Thursday. I know because mama gave me “Thursday” for my middle name.

- SAND, WIND, & NOISE -

I was there with her the day they first flew, mama said, but all I remember is the cold sand. And the puppy they called, “Blue.” He was my friend.

I was 3 years old.

— I REMEMBER THE SOUND OF AIRPLANES —

They say I was born under the big sky of Montana, but my next memory is of France. My mama took me there to see the airplane show.

The year was 1909, and people came from around the world to see the magic.

— MAMA COULDN’T STAY —

Mama introduced me to her friend Roland. He took me and Blue for our first airplane ride.

When we came back, mama wasn’t there.

I stayed with Roland after that, and he taught me to fly.

On my 14th birthday, I took Blue for a ride over Paris.
